Newport Police Warn Residents of Phony Utility Bill Collector Phone Scam

More than one Newport resident has recently been a victim of a scam involving phone calls from people claiming to be representatives of National Grid demanding immediate payment for overdue electricity bills, police said.

The callers threaten that electricity will be cut off unless immediate payment of a supposed bill if paid.

Police said if you get a call from someone claiming to be from the utility company, do not give any personal or financial information over the phone and call police. Police are keeping track of reports of the scam.

National Grid has warned customers about the scam in recent weeks and reminds residents that the utility does not demand immediate payment by phone with threats of shutoff, nor does it threaten to shut off power in the winter. If you have questions about your bill, call National Grid at 1-800-870-1664.
