Newport Police Log: Stolen Ladder, Pot Possession, Assault and Threats Arrests

The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Edwin R. Cruz, 48, of 27 Park Holm, Newport, was arrested around 8:23 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 17, for an active warrant for failure to appear in court and a larceny under $500 charge.

An officer was patrolling Festival Field when he saw two men take a forty foot ladder from the maintenance shed, reports said. The two were carrying the ladder down a path towards Walmart when they were ordered to stop.

The two men took off running. Police were able to detain Cruz.

According to the maintenance man, the men did not have permission to take the ladder.

Middletown Man Charged with Marijuana Possession

Gary P. Lewis, 31, of Middletown, was arrested around 7:41 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, for first-offense marijuana possession and resisting arrest charges.

An officer stopped Lewis for a headlight violation after seeing people in two cars make a transaction at Hillmart.

During the stop, Lewis was acting nervously and would not comply with police requests, reports said.

Police found marijuana in his glove box during a search.

Woman Arrested for Alleged Threats

Laura Anderson, 45, of 72 Dr. Wheatland Blvd., Newport, was arrested around 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, for a disorderly threats charge.

According to reports, Anderson drove up to a Rolling Green residence, got out of the car and began yelling threats at another woman.

A witness who was with the woman confirmed the story.

Police also questioned a woman who was inside during the incident, who said she had heard yelling outside.

Domestic Assault Arrest

Davene Williams, of Newport, was arrested around 8:18 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, for a domestic assault charge.

Police were dispatched to the Newport Hospital emergency room for an assault report. The victim told police Williams had rung her door bell several times around 2 a.m. that morning and again at 2:45 a.m.

She said Williams was pushing the door to get into the house and allegedly kicked her in the stomach.
