Newport Police Log: Police Allegedly Threatened with Knife, 5 Other Arrests

The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Michelle R. Dupree, 51, of no known address, was arrested around 11:20 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, for a felony assault with a dangerous weapon charge.

Police were dispatched to Motel 6 for a report of a disorderly woman.

Dupree had locked herself in her room and refused to open it when police arrived. The door had to be pried open and when police entered the room, Dupree was reportedly holding a “large” steak knife and was pointing and waving it at the officer.

Dupree eventually dropped the knife when police took out a tazer.

Man Arrested for Shoplifting, Warrant

Jose M. Sanchez, 21, of Newport, was arrested around 2:26 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, for a warrant for domestic vandalism and a shoplifting charge.

Police were dispatched to Walmart for a shoplifting report. They stopped Sanchez, who was holding several boxes near the path leading to Festival Field.

A security officer at Walmart told police Sanchez had been acting suspiciously. He picked up a wireless router, two blue-ray players, and a DVD player and then exited through the garden center, reports said.

Police also found Sanchez had an active warrant for domestic vandalism during the incident.  

Other arrests

  • David C. Nelson, 46, of 49 Garfield St., Newport, was arrested around 7:05 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, for an active warrant.
  • Steven Burton, 24, of Newport, was arrested around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, for a domestic simple assault charge.
  • Stephen O. Lucier II, 27, of Newport, was arrested around 1:20 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, for a domestic simple assault charge.
  • Leon E. Sampson, 23,  of 15 Meeting St., Newport, was arrested around 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, for three active warrants for failure to appear in court.
