Newport Police Log: Mother and Son Arrest, Duo Busted for Breaking and Entering

The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A Newport man and woman were arrested around 7 p.m. on Sunday night for reportedly breaking and entering into a Catherine Street home and taking “a large amount” of copper and brass.

Kevin T. Donohue, 39, of 8 Harvard St., and Alycia W. Dougherty, 25, of 45 Gibbs Ave., were both charged with breaking and entering.

A neighbor told police a man and woman had been putting metal in the trunk of a small white car. There were also sneaker prints at the scene.

Based on the witnesses descriptions, police located Donohue and Dougherty. They also seized sneakers that matched the prints.

Donohue initially denied breaking in, but later said he had done work for the owner of 33 Catherine St. When he stopped working there in August, he had left tools which he never was able to reclaim.

He reportedly told police that he broke in, and when the tools were not there, he took six sheets of copper flashing and a box full of brass which he scrapped for about $200 in a metal yard in Providence.

Reports also said the Doughtery admitted to breaking in as well, but that she said she did not remember much of the night because she had been high on heroin and other medication.

Arrest is a family affair

A mother and son were arrested around 5:40 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26 during a routine traffic stop.

Peter Rosario Jr., 31, and Marilu Rivera, 48, both of 6 Robert Douglas Lane, Newport, were charged with resisting arrest. Rosario was also charged with driving with a suspended license, while Rivera was charged with simple assault and obstructing an officer.

Police pulled Rosario over for driving with a broken brake light. When police began to arrest him for the suspended license he begin to resist, reports said.
