Newport PD to Test New Electric Motorcycle During St. Patrick's Day Parade

Newport PD is going green for the St. Patrick's Day parade. With a motorcycle.

Newport Police will be testing an electric motorcycle during the St. Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday.

The bike is a ZERO Electric Dual Sport motorcycle and the police department is researching the feasibility of using them for patrol operations.

The motorcycle has been custom outfitted for police use by Warwick-based SEEMS Electric Vehicles.

"The Newport Police Department continually evaluates operations and to seek energy efficient alternatives that are cost effective and efficient to its operations," a release stated.

The electric motorcycle will be assessed to determine its agility, stealth and application in operations for downtown and park areas of Newport this summer, along with special events and concerts.

Newport Police Lt. Daniel Dvorak is spearheading the initiative, according to SEEMS EV, and the company noted the bike is silent but fast and can get to 60 mph from a standstill in under 4 seconds.

Part of that power comes from the instant torque of an electric motor. Combined with its light weight, the motorcycle could be a versatile tool in their fleet, leaving no exhaust to boot.

The bike has direct drive, which means no transmission or clutch or gears. To drive, you simply twist and go, which makes them "ideal for urban terrain," the company said.
