Newport Man Charged with Second Degree Child Abuse

Police say the man allegedly grabbed a child and the child's mother by the neck

Newport Police charged a 30-year-old Newport man with second degree child abuse and other charges after he allegedly grabbed a child and her mother by the neck in a violent outburst Monday night.

Jason Anthony Bailey, 30, of no known address, was arrested at 9:35 p.m. after police responded to a city address for a report of a disorderly person.

Police said Bailey punched several holes in the wall, threw a bottle of liquor at a child doing homework and grabbed that child and a women by the neck as they were sitting on the couch after screaming “I’m going to choke you.”

Police said an investigation determined that Bailey was drinking during his stay at the house and  his actions led them to charge him with felony second degree child abuse, domestic simple assault, domestic disorderly conduct and domestic vandalism.

Baily was arraigned this morning and released on surety bail. He is due to appear in Second Division District on April 22 for a screening conference and May 22 for a Attorney General conference.
