Updated: Newport Man Charged with Trespassing

Police said the man forced his way into the woman's apartment and raped her.

A 26-year-old Newport man was charged trespassing Saturday after he allegedly forced his way into a Newport woman's apartment.

Update: Police said initial charges of rape have been dropped after the alleged victim recanted her story.

Police responded to the Festival Field apartment complex for a report of a disturbance and said Terry Hilson Jr. was arrested a short time later.

Police said Hilson knew the woman and a no-trespass order was in effect.

Hilson was free on $20,000 bail on charges of second-degree child abuse charges stemming from incident last June in which he allegedly slapped a one-year-old child's face.

Hilson was arraigned and is being held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston on the new charges.
