Newporter Allegedly Assaults Man With Boiling Water

The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A Newport man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly poured boiling water on a man.

Newport police officers were called to Newport Hospital Thursday morning at 4:40 a.m. for an alleged assault. A 44-year-old Newport man had walked into the hospital, stating someone had thrown hot water on him.

The man had sustained second degree burns on his face, right arm, right side of his neck and inside his mouth, according to police reports. The victim was later transferred to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Before being transferred, the victim told police he didn't know why the man poured water on him.

He informed officers he didn't want to “rat” on anyone. He then began to describe the suspect as a white man with a swastika tattoo on the ride side of his forehead. The man also had an unusual tattoo on his forehead, which read “American Made.”

Police later identified the suspect as Stephen Edward Bobola, 52, of 171 Broadway, Apt. 11, Newport.

The two men apparently got into an argument at Bobola's residence. At the suspect's apartment, police found two pans, including one still filled with water. Both of the pans were warm to the touch.

Another man at the home told police the suspect regularly boils water at night to remove chlorine.
