Four Teens Charged After Beating Man With Tree Branch

The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Four teenagers, three 15-year-olds from Newport and a 16-year-old from the Bronx, N.Y., were arrested around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10. The Bronx boy was charged with felony assault with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy, one boy was charged with felony assault with a dangerous weapon, another was charged with felony assault with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy, and the other was charged with simple assault and conspiracy.

Police responded to an assault report on Mary Street and found a 45-year-old man bleeding on the ground. There was a tree branch nearby in the road.

The victim told police he had been jumped from behind and was beaten with the stick and kicked by several teenage boys.

A witness, who reportedly saw the assault from his home, confirmed the victim’s account. He said he had used a laser pointer to point a red dot on the suspects to scare them away before calling police. He said they ran away when he came outside.

Police detained the suspects in Washington Square, who were positively identified by the witness.

The victim was taken to Newport Hospital for treatment.
