ACI Guard Charged With Assaulting Inmate

The corrections officer is accused of using excessive force while moving an unruly inmate.

A guard at the ACI in Cranston has been charged with assaulting a prisoner in the high security ward, the RI State Police announced Thursday afternoon.

Jonathan Addison, 44, of 365 Simmonsville Ave., Johnston, was arrested at his home Wednesday, charged with simple assault, Col. Stephen O'Donnell announced in a release Thursday.

Addison is accused of using excessive force on a prisoner who was being moved from the high security ward to segregation due to his "unruly behavior," State Police Captain Kevin M. O’Brien said. Surveillance video showed Addison "struck the inmate with his knee to the stomach," O'Brien said.

The State Police and the ACI Investigations Unit combined on the investigation.
