800 Navy Employees Sent Home Tuesday After Shutdown

800 civilian employees will be sent home Tuesday as a result of the government shutdown. Military personnel will continue to come to work as usual but impacts to operations are expected.

Approximately 800 Naval Station (NAVSTA) Newport civilian employees deemed non-essential to emergency/life support operations are being sent home today as a result of the government shutdown. Civilian employees at all of the commands, with the exception of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, are impacted.

Military personnel will continue to come to work as usual but impacts to operations are expected. Security and fire emergency personnel are exempt from this shutdown.

On base population includes approximately 2,300 active duty and Reserve military, 4,200 civilians and 2,800 contractors.

The following measures are being taken to adjust to this personnel shortfall:

  • The Naval Station Newport Pass & ID office is closed. If someone has an urgent requirement to come onto the base, they should call dispatch at 841-4041.
  • The Naval War College museum is closed for the duration of the shutdown.
  • Naval Health Clinic New England Newport anticipates longer wait times at the clinic but all offices are open.
  • Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities are open as usual.
  • Navy Exchange facilities are open as usual.
  • Personnel Service Detachment Newport is closed.  No ID cards, travel assistance or pay services are available.
