13-Year-Old Charged for Vandalizing Car with Knife

The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A 13-year-old Newport boy was arrested around 9:40 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16, for vandalism, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest charges.

Police responded to Park Holm for a report of a man with a knife.

They located the teenager and detained him. He struggled with police when they tried to restrain him and tried several times to pull away, reports said.

According to the boy's aunt, he started a physical fight with her son. He reportedly went inside, returned with two small knives and ran out to go after his cousin. His aunt restrained him, and with help from neighbors, took the knives away.

Reports said he ran away and returned with another knife. He then threw the knife at a car windshield, breaking it, picked up it up and slashed the rear tire, and hit the windshield again.

Police located a broken butcher knife on the ground near the scene.  

Assault Arrest

Cheyne W. Cousens, 30, of 7 Lowndes St., Newport, was arrested around 12:45 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 17, for a simple assault charge. Cousens was charged for punching a man at Benjamin's.
