Just a few telltale signs that prove one's origins as a Newporter...I'm sure others can contribute more .... 1. You don't use Tupperware, you use old Newport Creamery half gallon containers. 2. You still mourn the loss of Marcucci's. 3. Going to Portsmouth requires planning. 4. Going to America (over either bridge) necessitates filing a float plan with the Coast Guard. 5. You need genetic counseling before your nuptials to ensure you aren't marrying a cousin. 6. All directions involve either "going past Sully's house" or "past Almac's".

When you go to the Creamery and order a dusty sundae. You would rather buy your daily news from the blue bins then go in the store. You stay away from down town at all cost during the summer. You miss Newburys. Pit and patio. And can't for the life of you figure out why Bens chili dog was sold. You have fallen at least once on the cobblestones. You know what the Craig is and that you really shouldn't swim in it. You've been in the Bells before it was actually iilegal. You really miss Christy's. You shopped at cherry and web and chritina's shoes but it was pronounced Christeaana's shoe :)You spotted the skipper. And the America's cup was Ours. You remember the whistlers from Gaslight. And you used to get the best cup of Cocoa at seamans institute. You remember when the police parade went down Kay street. And that the colonial had the cheapest and best lobtah rolls. You used to play in the rows of beach houses at second beach. And you have definetly skated on Lilly pond.

You know you're from Newport when the waitresses at Salas' and Handy Lunch know what you're going to order as you're sitting down. They may not know your name, but they know exactly what you're gonna have. Furthermore you REALLY know you're from Newport when they give you a hard time if you decide to get something different. "You're not getting the Chicken and Broccoli? What's the matter? Are you feeling OK? You sure? You know, I could put a plate aside for you if you want, because I know you're gonna want some later."

You know you are from Newport when you remember parking at the 'Bells', highschool parties at abandoned James Estate, you worked at the Creamery, the Treadway, and the Viking. You saw Areosmith at the Viking in the 70s in a conference room, danced at the Electric Elephant each weekend, 2fers night at Bojanjes with Steve Rizzo singing the 'Year of the Cat' in the background.. sleded on Cowsil Hill, skated on the Big Pond after school often.. it was always frozen in winter. When Thames street had a different shoreline.. Brick Market is where there were piers.Your grandmother would take you to Edith's candy on Broadway and then stop at RI linch for hotdog and iced coffe. Hanging on 'The Wall' at Bellevue every weekend, and you know you are from Newport when you knew every inch of the Fort and area bunkers at Fort Adams before the 'cleanup and restore' ...

When you can remember dusty sundaes; stuffed quahogs at Yesterday's, navy guys dressed in white; parties at the war college; the restaurant at HoJo's; the chance of getting a part in the Gatsby movie. When, even after moving away, it's still close to your heart.
