Active Community Member Dies at 77

Stanley Kalwak, a Housing Authority supervisor, served the community in Newport and Middletown.

Stanley F. Kalwak, 77, of Newport, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Valerie (Brown) Kalwak for 54 years.

Born in Newport, RI on April 11, 1936, he was the son of the late Francis and Rosalind (Perry) Kalwak. Mr. Kalwak lived on Cannon Street in Newport as a child and grew up working on the family farm on Jepson Lane in Middletown.

He worked for the Newport Housing Authority for 39 years, retiring as a supervisor. Mr. Kalwak assisted in the construction of the Middletown FOP Hall. He was also active with the Aquidneck Island Police Parade committee, and was named the only civilian Parade Marshall. He was a life member of the FOPA, a longtime member of the Newport Elks Lodge, and a proud volunteer with the James L. Maher Horticultural Center. He was also a member of the Newport Democratic City committee. 

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Michael Kalwak and his wife Georgina of Coventry, and Kimberly Downing and her husband Jerry of Middletown, his sister Beverly Clark of Uxbridge, MA and his grandchildren, Joshua Downing, Zachary Downing, Andrew Kalwak and Rayden Whitfield.

He was the father of the late Anita Kalwak and the brother of the late Francis Thomas Kalwak.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, Dec. 20, 3-5 p.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. A prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. Burial will be private.
