Nestled in an otherwise non-descript strip mall in Exeter is a beautiful oasis of romantic charm and delicious food. The Celestial Café in Exeter is located off a
country road with the ripe smell of logs burning and plenty of stars to gaze at. I must have driven by it a hundred times on my way to URI or to my mother’s work on Route 138 or Kingston Station and never once noticed its existence. I am so glad my girlfriend Heather made this suggestion.
As I walked in the front door, I immediately felt comfortable in this restaurant, even though I had never stepped foot in it. The hardwood floors were very inviting. The décor offered a modern feel through its artwork and color schemes. Heather and I were sat immediately to the table our choice by a very soft spoken and accommodating server. As soon as we sat down, I was struck by the intimate lighting. I was able to see Heather and the beautiful patterns on her dress as well as her gorgeous face. The lighting provided a sort of spotlight on her, which I felt added to the romantic feel of this restaurant. This evening, the Celestial Café was moderately crowded, yet I never felt the need to raise my voice to be heard, nor did I strain to hear any conversation from Heather. The background music was just enough for me to hear it but it did not dominate the space I was occupying.
The menu was filled with a wide variety of interesting choices. They did a really nice job recognizing local wineries and traditional Rhode Island-type cuisine. However, the more eclectic choices were clearly the way to go and they did not disappoint. For appetizers, Heather and I settled on the sweet potato wonton as well as the chipotle and blue cheese sausage dishes. The presentation and smells were just amazing and the food was flavorful and refreshingly new for me. For dinner, we settled on a nice bottle of wine with chicken carbonara and ginger teriyaki tuna as our entrees. Again, the smell and presentation of the food was wonderful. We both made sure to eat slowly to savor every bite. After dinner and a few glasses of wine, we chose the espresso cheesecake brule to
finish our memorable evening of eating. Like the other dishes, it was absolutely delicious.
I would highly recommend the Celestial Café for any date night, especially a romantic one. It has a relaxing atmosphere that allows you to focus on your partner. The lighting is soft and warm. The staff is friendly and attentive. It is a quiet dining area where you can feel comfortable having a personal connection with your partner without having to shout your feelings. The menu has a ton of local favorites and some other choices that are sure to become your favorites. My senses were captivated by the smells, tastes, sights, sounds, and feel of this beautiful restaurant. Heather and I had a beautiful experience and we can’t wait to go back.
