Newport Hospital Offers Volunteer Opportunities

(NEWPORT, R.I.) – Looking for a volunteer opportunity in Newport? Newport Hospital is now recruiting for a number of volunteer positions throughout the hospital.

Mobility Volunteers

If you are interested in bringing the gift of a “walk & talk” to patients this position is right for you. There will be a comprehensive training in October provided by the physical therapy and nursing staff on how to safely ambulate patients. Volunteers are needed for a once-a-week, two-hour commitment.

Supplies Surveillance Coordinator

The infection control nurse and safety committee will partner with volunteers to audit supplies closets. Must have good organizational skills, attention to detail and enjoy working independently. The volunteer will rotate supplies, check for outdated materials, and look for the sterility and integrity of packaging. You will be trained and asked to volunteer for eight hours a month for at least a year. This can be done as a team project with two people.

Gift Shop Cashiers

Volunteers who seek a position in retail and customer service can apply to volunteer in the Newport Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop. The shop is a fun boutique serving hospital employees and visitors seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Volunteers will assist customers in all aspects of the retail experience. Must have ability to operate cash register, credit card machine and make change.

Comfort Care Team

Volunteers on the Comfort Care Team offer patients and their caregivers hand massage, Reiki and guided imagery. The adjunctive therapies are proven to be effective for reducing the stress of illness and managing pain. Volunteers must have Reiki Level I certification. Registered massage therapist will provide training in hand massage for the hospital setting.

High School Students After-School Transport

Teens are needed to provide patient wheelchair transport, escort visitors to their destination, deliver flowers and run errands. The position is Monday through Friday at the Information Desk from 3 to 5 p.m. Each student is asked to take one shift a week for a minimum of six months.

  • Complete an on-line volunteer application at www.newporthospital.org or call 845-4244 to receive an application.
  • Attend a Volunteer Information Session. Sessions are held in the Gudoian Conference Room at Newport Hospital from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Upcoming information sessions will be held on: September 10, October 9 and November 4. No registration required.
  • Participate in an interview, criminal background check, provide two professional references, and complete the mandatory health screening.
