Red Carpet Gala: An Interactive Award Experience on February 24th

Jane Pickens Theater gears up for 3rd Annual Red Carpet Gala

The Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center will host the 3rd Annual Red Carpet Gala featuring a LIVE telecast from Hollywood of the 85th Annual Academy Awards at the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport, R.I. on Sunday, February 24, 2013.   The Oscars Red Carpet Live “pre-show” telecast proceeding the Academy Awards will also be streamed LIVE.

This year, the theater – one of the oldest movie houses in the country – will include a Twitter Wall as part of the expanding use of technology in the evening’s entertainment.  As gala attendees Tweet about the event, those messages will be posted to an actual and over-sized “Twitter Wall” to be located in the theater’s auditorium.

Dress is “Blue Jeans to Black Tie” as the Red Carpet Gala kicks off at 6:30 p.m. and attendees will enjoy a complimentary glass of champagne and hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants as the party gets under way.  A cash bar will also offer champagne along with wine and beer.

The party continues with the LIVE telecast of the Oscars Red Carpet Live “pre-show” which begins at 7:00 p.m.  The theater’s big screen will offer a larger-than-life view of the Hollywood celebrity fashions on the red carpet outside the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles as movie stars and the film industry’s power brokers, writers, directors, technical wizards, and other various artists involved in the craft of movie-making all arrive for the Academy Awards Ceremony.

The fashion statements being made at the Jane Pickens Theater will also be a part of this year’s program and attendees will enjoy seeing digital images of themselves taken as they arrive for the evening soiree projected on the big screen during the commercial breaks from the Oscars Red Carpet Live telecast.

The Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center lends itself to an evening that celebrates Hollywood and the art of making movies.  Named one of the five top cinemas in New England by Yankee Magazine , the Jane Pickens features a rare commodity - a big, classic movie screen.  This, along with the theater’s soaring ceiling and the stage’s curtained proscenium arch, harkens back to Hollywood’s “Golden Era” and a time when the “pictures” were always shown in large format.

The evening continues as the Oscars Red Carpet Live show segues into the 85th Annual Academy Awards show at 8:30.  The ‘Interactive” theme will also continue with film trivia questions and prizes along with a silent ballot contest to name the winners of the Top 5 categories (Best Actress,  Best Actor,  Best Director,  Best Screenplay and Best Picture).  And as a special treat, the Marley Bridges Theatre Company, led by the company’s Artistic Director Patrick Grimes, will present live skit interpretations of the Best Picture nominees.

During the telecast of the Academy Awards show, coffee and desserts from local Newport restaurants will be served and the cash bar and the theater’s concession stand will remain open.

As one of America's oldest theaters and Newport's treasured, classic big-screen movie house, the Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center is proud to present this special evening using state-of-the-art technology to link up with Hollywood in celebration the film industry and the art of movie-making.
