Troop 3 Newport Honors Newest Eagle Scout

Newport's newest Eagle Scout is BSA Troop 3's Brian Thomas Rayner.

BSA Troop 3 Newport recently celebrated the achievements of their newest Eagle Scout, Brian Thomas Rayner. The Court of Honor and scout candle ceremony at the Elks Lodge was attended by friends, family and dignitaries; including RI Senate President Teresa Paiva-Weed, Mayor Harry Winthrop and Jack McCormack Site Manager, Fort Adams Trust, the beneficiary of Brian’s Leadership Project. 

Speaking on Brian’s behalf was Don Fitzpatrick, Executive Chef at Bailey’s Beach.  Master of Ceremonies was Glenn Gardiner, Troop 3 Newport’s scoutmaster who told the crowd about Brian’s hardworking nature and follow through always delivered with humor and kindness.  The Invocation was given by Father Raymond Malm of St. Joseph’s Church and the Benediction was given by Louise Costley.  His mentor pin was given to his aunt, Carol Rayner who is also his godmother.

Brian is graduating from Rogers High School and has been active in the JROTC unit, currently serving as Battalion Command Sergeant Major.  He has served on the color guard, drill, saber, raider and rifle teams.  He has earned Varsity letters for rifle and the indoor/outdoor track teams.  He was also on the JV baseball team.  Brian’s senior project involved the development of an informational recruitment video for the JROTC.  He recently received the following awards from the JROTC:  The 22nd Infantry Society Award for Excellence in Military History and The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Leadership Award.  Brian worked for the Newport Daily News as a carrier for the past eight years and works summers at Bailey’s Beach.  He and his family are members of St. Joseph’s Church.

Brian’s leadership project was held at Fort Adams and involved cutting and splitting wood for firewood and building shelves to stack and store it. This project involved over 15 scouts and parents and almost 200 hours of effort to benefit the Fort Adams Trust. 

Brian plans to attend Indiana University in the fall to pursue a career in business or criminal justice.

Boys in Troop 3 range in age from 11-17 years old. They attend Cluny School, St. Philomena School, Thompson Middle School, Rogers & Middletown High Schools and some are home schooled.
