Newport Ranked as One of Most Charitable Communities in RI

Newport ranked third out of 72 communities for charitable giving

Newport is ranked as one of the most charitable communities in Rhode Island, according to analysis conducted by GoLocalProv.com

Communities, based on zip codes, were ranked by the amount of discretionary income that was donated to a charitable cause. The data was taken from the Chronicle for Philanthropy via 2008 tax returns, which is the most recent available year.

Households within 02840 gave a median contribution of $2,379, or 4.52 percent of their income. The total of $9.53 million of donations positioned Newport as the third most charitable community out of 72 zip codes.

Newport was only beat by 02881 (Kingston, South Kingstown), which donated a median of 4.94 percent of total income and 02907 (Providence, Cranston), which donated 4.97 percent.

Portsmouth ranked 29th and Middletown ranked 11th.

Interesting perspective on Rhode Islanders' charitable giving. I appreciate the reporter's highlighting the high level of poverty in Newport -- so many upstate leaders see us as "rich" because of our glamorous facades -- mansions and museums -- they don't bother to delve into the real data! Many Newport families are struggling -- we all need to pay attention to their needs! Thankfully, many generous citizens do -- hence our ranking as 3rd most giving community in the state. Political leaders often see what they wish, focusing on tourism rather than improving the educational opportunities and "real" (not seasonal) jobs that bolster our economy. Indeed another good example of style vs substance!
