Newport ranked third out of 72 communities for charitable giving

Newport is ranked as one of the most charitable communities in Rhode Island, according to analysis conducted by GoLocalProv.com

Communities, based on zip codes, were ranked by the amount of discretionary income that was donated to a charitable cause. The data was taken from the Chronicle for Philanthropy via 2008 tax returns, which is the most recent available year.

Households within 02840 gave a median contribution of $2,379, or 4.52 percent of their income. The total of $9.53 million of donations positioned Newport as the third most charitable community out of 72 zip codes.

Newport was only beat by 02881 (Kingston, South Kingstown), which donated a median of 4.94 percent of total income and 02907 (Providence, Cranston), which donated 4.97 percent. 

Portsmouth ranked 29th and Middletown ranked 11th.
