The fifth annual Newport Independent Music Fest Concert series at King Park will open on June 26 and run through September 11. These free, public concerts are presented by the City of Newport on summer Sundays in the park gazebo from 3:00 to 6:00 pm, made possible with support from Mrs. Samuel M.V. Hamilton.
The Sunday concert schedule is: 6/26 Firecracker Jazz Band (Dixieland/swing); 7/3 Slippery Sneakers (zydeco); 7/10 Legend-The Bob Marley Tribute Band (reggae); 7/17 Greg Sherrod Band (pop/blues); 7/24 Big Cat Blues Band (rock/blues); 8/14 Girl Howdy (alt country); 8/21 Lil Anne & Hot Cayenne (creole/zydeco); 8/28 Horseshoe Lounge Playboys (bluegrass/country); 9/4 Abbey Rhode (Beatles); 9/11 Michael Walsh (pop/original).
Also a number of King Park concerts will take place in cooperation with two other community events: “Bridgefest,” August 1-4 between the Newport Folk and Jazz festivals, and on the opening day, Sept. 11th of “Viewport,” the outdoor sculpture installation which runs 9/11 to 10/10.
During “Bridgefest,” performances run 4:00-6:00 pm: Monday 8/1 Songwriters Showcase with Kevin and Gianna Sullivan & Special Guests; Tuesday 8/2 Chelley, Bill & Dyl (pop); Wednesday 8/3 Lois Vaughn (piano jazz); Thursday 8/4 Chris Vaillancourt & Friends (original rock). During “Viewport” on Sept 11, Michael Walsh (original piano/vocals) will perform 3:00 to 6:00 pm.
King Park is located on the Newport Harbor, Wellington Avenue in the Lower Thames district. Barbeque and picnic facilities, bathrooms, and playgrounds are available. Park on Wellington Avenue or in the gravel lot near the Harry Hogan Little League field.
