Newport Public Library to Honor Ruth Barge Thumbtzen

Ruth Barge Thumbtzen was selected unanimously by the event committee of the Newport Public Library to serve as its Honorary Chair of A Novel Evening@The Hub of Newport, the library's annual fundraising event to be held on Sunday Aug. 11, at the library from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Ms. Thumbtzen who taught physical and health education in the Newport school system for 30 years and served for 10 years as the community service liaison at Salve Regina University is a respected and valued community volunteer. She has been a trustee of the Newport Public Library, President of the Board of Trustees of the Martin Luther King Center, is currently a member of the Salvation Army Community Advisory Board, as well as, President of the Mora Hammonds Scholarship Fund. 

Upon learning of her selection Ruth commented, "I am honored and surprised to be selected. The library has been one of my favorite places to serve.  As an educator, I view the the Newport Public Library as the focal point for learning in the community."

While the library is physically open open 64 hours per week, it must be open virtually on-line 24/7, in order to meet the needs of its patrons and the community.  The Newport Public Library is a separate non-profit organization, which is not a department of the city.  The proceeds from this event will be used in support of maintaining and enhancing the library's collection and technological resources.
