Implementing a Sustainable Events Protocol in Newport

A Public Forum Sponsored by the Newport Energy & Environment Commission

What: Sustainable Event Protocols in Newport – A Public Forum
When: November 19, 2013 |6:00pm
Where: Freedom Room (Third Floor), Marriott Hotel, Newport, RI

The Newport Energy and Environment Commission is excited to host a public forum about implementing a protocol for sustainable events in Newport. The meeting will focus on the NEEC's efforts to build sustainable event protocols for Newport events. Several speakers and case studies will be featured, including the Atlantic Cup, newportFILM, and Clean Water Action will be reporting on the Newport Folk & Jazz Festivals. Each of these organizations successfully participated in making their event a “sustainable event” this past summer. Beverly Migliori from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Affairs will also speak to how Newport is progressing.

Additionally, the NEEC is seeking input on a proposal to introduce a mandatory recycling ordinance, which will require all publicly licensed events to recycle.

This event is free and open to the public.

The NEEC has been working very hard in the past year to measure how sustainable Newport events are and, to that end, the NEEC has studied many events in the City this year. The Commission is striving to work as a community to implement sustainable practices during major events held in Newport to reduce the impact of huge numbers of visitors on our sensitive coastal community and to create model methods of behavior that will protect our island for decades to come. The NEEC wants to encourage sustainable events that make Newport a desirable and exciting tourist destination, build a stable economy and reduce impact on our valuable island resources.

Newport’s Energy & Environment Commission’s mission is to advise the City Council & the public on issues regarding energy & the environment.  Contact Beth Milham at: bpmilham@cox.net for more information.
