Marriage Equality Will Bring Economic Opportunity, NCCC Says

The Newport County Chamber of Commerce released a statement recognizing the positive impact marriage equality would have on the local economy.

The Board of Directors of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce has issued a statement endorsing same-sex marriage legislation in Rhode Island.

The NCCC said in its release that it recognizes “the positive economic impact seen by the hospitality and wedding industries in states, including our neighboring New England states, with marriage equality.”

“Marriage equality could have a substantial positive economic impact on our members, especially in the hospitality and wedding industries,” said Laura F. Pedrick, chair of the Newport County Chamber Board of Directors. “Currently, Rhode Island is at a competitive disadvantage with our New England neighbors who already have marriage equality.”

The day after the House Judiciary Committee unanimously voted to recommend passage of legislation allowing same-sex marriage in Rhode Island, The Rhode Island House of Representatives approved it 51 to 19.

Rep. Arthur Hardy is the primary sponsor for the bill, said the same-sex marriage legislation is “.”

Although I am not against it --- I wonder what the nccc is smoking? Are u people drunk? The reason Rhode Island is in such bad shape is the criminal behavior if the officials and the taxation.

It's nonsense. Are we to give up our morals, ethics and continue this erosion of our culture all for the sake of a few bucks.

Economic reasons are NOT point...it is about equity for all and "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"......and "nagaer40" it certainly doesn't mean that YOU are giving up your "morals, ethics and the erosion of our culture".......there are many, many factors that contribute to that.....and same sex marriage is NOT one of them IMHO.

Marriage is between a man and a woman. I will not be forced to accept your twisted definition of marriage. It is the destruction of the family that is the root cause of our continued moral decline.

nagaer40 believes a definition of marriage that was made-up by a bunch of storytellers centuries ago. There is no proof this definition is "correct". And nagaer40, regarding your holier-than-thou attitude = LOL

Bravo! I am a jeweler who is dependant on a robust and vibrant wedding industry. This is a smart business decision for the chamber. Since the chamber is about business matters and not matters of morality, this is a wise statement for them to make.

You can always unsub from Patch. That way you don't have to read anything that you do not accept as anybodys definitions and and thoughts. Personally I thought that it was all about for the wives to go out during Lent and catch, clean and cook the fish.
