Summer Travel Forecast for Newport Looks Sunny

Newport is ramping up for a promising tourism season, according to Discover Newport.

On the eve of the Memorial Day weekend, Newport’s hospitality industry is ramping up for what looks to be a promising tourism season ahead, says President & CEO Evan Smith.

“We’re very optimistic about a healthy summer,” says Smith. “Led by world-class events, weddings and outdoor recreation, the 2012 summer season has every indicator of being a strong one.”  

Hotels, restaurants and attractions are among the many sectors of the industry expecting a robust turnout for Newport’s peak travel months.

“[We’re] anticipating a very busy season,” says Geremie Callaghan, owner of  on Bowen’s Wharf. “We will be expanding our hours of operation and already have many events booked, especially around America's Cup, but throughout the summer and well into the fall.” 

Walter Andrews, General Manager of the , echoes the sentiments. “Summer looks strong for the Newport Marriott.  With the many special events and festivals throughout, most weekends are close to selling out. Being fully staffed and ready to go, we are looking forward to a busy and exciting summer.”

According to Cathy Morrison, Vice President of Operations at Discover Newport, advance ticket sales for attractions, tours and events have been strong. “With the out and all the other events coming to Newport, our phones have been ringing off the hook!” she says. “We have been selling America’s Cup tickets for several weeks now and people are really excited. We certainly are anticipating a busy summer.”
