Newport Storm Introduces New Brew

The beer is the 26th beer in its series of limited release beers, following 25 previous beers named for succeeding letters in the alphabet, starting with Alyssa and finally landing on Z, for Zach.

The latest limited release beer from Newport Storm is Cyclone Zach — an "intense beer, both in its brewing and favor profile," the Newport-based brewery announced recently.

The beer is the 26th beer in its series of limited release beers, following 25 previous beers named for succeeding letters in the alphabet, starting with Alyssa and finally landing on Z, for Zach.

Cyclone Zach is an imperial stout brewed with six mashes — four more than the usual two — and Brew Master Derek Luke said he developed a special process he calls "wort-loss reduction" for the beer.

Rather than discarding valuable sugars remaining at the end of each mash, they were used in lieu of water in each successive mash. This process increased the final kettle sugar concentration, thus intensifying the beer’s flavor.

Zach has a 10.1 percent alcohol content, but the company said it's smooth at the same time thanks to extra tank conditioning time with added flaked oat to balce the roasted backbone of the beer.

Sales started last week.
