Breakers Welcome Center Gets Green Light

The decision overturned an earlier ruling by the Newport Historic District Commission to deny the project

The Newport Zoning Board of Review approved plans presented by the  Preservation Society of Newport Monday to build a $4.2 million welcome center at the Breakers mansion.

The decision overturned an earlier ruling by the Newport Historic District Commission to deny the project, citing concerns it was not historically appropriate for the grounds

The society said the 3,750-square-foot, one-story building would give the mansion’s 400,000 annual visitors a place to learn about the Newport mansions, have a snack and use the restrooms.

A neighborhood association who has opposed the plans is deciding whether to appeal the decision.

The project needs additional zoning approvals before it can begin.
