"Ghost Bike" Appears on Memorial Boulevard

The ghost bike was set up in memory of Dr. Elliot Kaminitz who was killed in a fatal bicycle accident on Memorial Boulevard.

If you have driven down Memorial Boulevard recently, you may have noticed a haunting bicycle chained to a sign post in memory of Elliot Kaminitz, who was involved in a fatal bicycle accident last June.

The "ghost bike," which was painted all white and set up anonymously at the site of Kaminitz's accident, appeared on Saturday. On it hangs a sign simply bearing Kamintz's name and a bouqet of white flowers.

"We don't know who placed the memorial, but we hope it will serve both to honor Elliot and remind passing motorists to pay attention, drive carefully and share the road," BikeNewport posted on its website.

Kaminitz, a retired Middletown dentist and avid bicyclist, was riding on Memorial Boulevard when he was struck by a vehicle on June 19. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Ghost bikes have been a growing trend across the country, Boston.com reported last week.

Unlike public memorials for car crash victims, ghost bikes appear mysteriously. No one takes credit for the deed, and it is seen as an act of solidarity and remembrance throughout the cycling community.

As long as the bike remains on Memorial Boulevard, it will stand as a reminder to drivers of Kaminitz and why it is so important to share the road.
