Suspect Remains in Jail, Try at Transparency Fails

Your Friday edition of news and notes about Newport.

In Custody: A 17-year-old boy remains in state custody following his arrest on a charge of second-degree child molestation by Newport Police. Authorities are continuing their investigation.

No Go: Newport City Councilors dropped a proposal by Councilor Michael Farley to track money in the Sister City fund, who argued that it's been used as a "slush fund." Farley's suggestion failed to garner a second from another councilor.

Weekend Agenda: With the weekend coming up and great weather expected, check out our list of what's happening in Newport this weekend, including concerts, improv, an art auction, and the Newport Storm Luau.

In Case You Missed It: A bit of relief for Newport Naval base civilian employees this week, as the Department of Defense has backed off a previous requirement for 11 furlough days. Workers must now complete six unpaid days off by Sept. 30 [if they haven't taken them by Aug. 17, which had been a previous requirement].

Enjoy It: More spectacular weather expected for Friday, with sunny skies and temps in the 70s. No rain expected through at least Monday.
