National Grid Seeks New Substation in Newport

The electric company will request a zoning amendment at Wednesday's City Council meeting allowing construction of a new station on J.T. Connell Highway.

Newport City Council will hold a public hearing Wednesday on a proposed zoning amendment that would allow public utilities in the commercial-industrial zone. The hearing is scheduled during the regular city council meeting on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers at Newport City Hall.

On April 10, National Grid submitted a request to amend the Newport Zoning Ordinance to permit the installation of an electrical substation on property located at 286 J.T. Connell Highway.

The intent of the project is “to improve the reliability of providing electrical service to business and residents of Newport,” wrote Neil Galvin, the attorney representing National Grid, in a letter to city council members.
