Touro Synagogue Foundation announces the second event of its 2024 Judah Touro Program Series, to be presented via Zoom on Thursday, May 9, at 7:00 p.m. ET. Author and genealogist <a href="https://geniemilgrom.com/about/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Genie Milgrom</a> will share the story of her journey back in time as she crossed the globe in search of her Crypto-Jewish ancestors. Genie was born in Havana, Cuba, into a Roman Catholic family of Spanish ancestry. In an unparalleled work of genealogy, she fully documented her unbroken maternal lineage of 22 generations going back as far as 1405, prior to the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal. 
Genie is the author of several award-winning books, My 15 Grandmothers, How I Found My 15 Grandmothers, A Step By Step Guide, and her latest book, Pyre to Fire. She
 is the president of Tarbut Sefarad-Fermoselle in Spain and past 
president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami and the 
Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies. She has spoken at the Knesset in 
Israel and throughout the world about Jews returning from the 
Inquisition.

ABOUT the Judah Touro Series and Touro Synagogue Foundation
The Touro Synagogue Foundation hosts the Judah Touro Series of lectures and events to connect the synagogue's history to significant themes in the American story, both past and present. The Foundation aims to create a relevant voice for that history by bringing it to a broader and more diverse audience. 


Originally known as “The Society of Friends of Touro Synagogue,” the 
Touro Synagogue Foundation was established in 1948 following the 
designation of Touro Synagogue, America’s oldest synagogue, as a 
National Historic Site. The Touro Synagogue Foundation is a 501(c) 3 
not-for-profit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to promoting and 
teaching religious diversity, colonial Jewish history, and the history

A new tour of the historic Saint Mary's Cemetery will be offered Saturday, May 11 at 1:00 p.m. by the <a href="https://newportirishhistory.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Museum of Newport Irish History</a> as part of <a href="https://preservation.ri.gov/ricw-events" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">R.I. Historical Cemeteries Awareness and Preservation Weeks.</a>
Local researcher and guide, Steve Marino, will give the outdoor tour of approximately 45 minutes. Explore
 the final resting place of well over 1,000 Newporters of the mid-1800s 
through the early 1900s, including countless immigrants from Ireland and
 first-generation Irish Americans. This cemetery was established to 
serve R.I.'s first Catholic parish (est. 1828), which, in 1848-1852 
constructed a new church to serve its growing congregation, 
fueled by immigration from Ireland. That church, dedicated in 1852 to "The Holy Name of Mary, Our Lady of the Isle,"
 stands today at the corner of Spring Street and Memorial Boulevard 
West. The St. Mary's Cemetery was in operation soon after the church was
 completed. Meet at the gate on Kingston Ave. near the intersection with Warner Street, shown in a photo on our webpage. No fee, but reservations are required. 
The tour will take place weather permitting. Light rain won’t stop the tour, but heavy downfalls and high winds will result in cancellation.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM The Museum of Newport Irish History,
 a volunteer-driven, non-profit 501c3 organization, was founded in 1996 
and now boasts over 900 members. In addition to operating an <a href="https://newportirishhistory.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Interpretive Center</a>
 on Lower Thames Street, the organization sponsors numerous educational,
 cultural, social, and fundraising events throughout the year, including
 its popular annual lecture series, now in its 22nd season. The 
organization also restored and maintains the historic <a href="https://newportirishhistory.org/historic-cemetery-tours/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Barney Street Cemetery</a>
 at the corner of Barney and Mt. Vernon Streets, steps from Washington 
Square. It is the final resting place of many of Newport’s earliest 
Irish residents and was the cemetery established to support Rhode 
Island’s first Roman Catholic parish, the forerunner of the current 
Saint Mary’s Church at the corner of Spring Street and Memorial 
Boulevard.

The 2023-24 season at the series' home venue, Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in Columbus Circle, includes 16 concerts and runs from October 22, 2023 through May 26, 2024, with concerts held every other Sunday at 11am in The Theater at MAD.&nbsp;

Guests at GatherNYC are served exquisite live classical music performed by New York's immensely talented artists, artisanal coffee and pastries, a taste of spoken word, and a brief celebration of silence. Praised as a “standout” with “star quality” by Opera News, Polish-American soprano Magdalena Kuźma is establishing a name for herself in both concert and operatic repertoire. When I initially entertained the concept of becoming a minister, I knew that my own use of words would be important - it could mean the difference between a person finding a soothing balm for their spirit, being “called out” on a challenging subject, or turning away from a spiritual walk that could help to free them from their pain and suffering.
Words do indeed Matter - to a person’s self-esteem and self-confidence, to a person’s livelihood, to the status of an important relationship. Whether they are words we say to ourselves (often the toughest) or words we say to others (often “throwaway words” hurt others the most), Words Matter.
Rev. Daniels has found refuge and inspiration in Unitarian Universalism for more than 20 years and is a 2022 graduate of Starr King School for the Ministry. Rev. Daniels provides guest preaching services to UU churches in the region.

Newport feels a lot different at night, especially in the silver glow of a full moon. A line of bike lights pierces the evening twilight. The drumbeat of waves lapping on the rocky shore. Mansions emerge before us, their majestic architecture lit up beyond their walls and hedges.
Our monthly Full Moon Rides – Sponsored by AARP Rhode Island have returned for the 2024 season. These scenic evening group rides wind along the Newport shoreline, delighting first-timers and returning riders alike. A Full Moon Ride is social and easygoing; the pace is patient, nobody gets left behind, and participants are welcome to finish their journey with food and libations.
The Full Moon Ride coastal route will bring us past scenic harbor, bay, and ocean views – lit first by the setting sun, and then by the rising moon. We’ll ride 15 miles on Newport’s scenic roads and coastline, around the beautiful Ocean Loop, and along the mansions of Bellevue Avenue. These rides have limited capacity, so be sure to register as each date’s tickets become available. All of the 2024 dates are listed below!
Suggested Donation: $10 per Rider. Donations are not a requirement. Donations of all sizes are welcome, and support Bike Newport’s inclusive programs for bike safety education and advocacy. Thank you! We require all riders to kindly pre-register on Eventbrite for our ride-planning purposes. All the Details: 20-30 minutes before the start of each ride we’ll gather at Equality Park on Broadway in downtown Newport, as marked by the star on the map, adjacent to Parlor Bar &amp; Kitchen (at 200 Broadway). The ride lasts roughly two hours from departure, returning to our starting spot.
The May 23 ride gathers at 7:00pm, starts at 7:30, with sunset at 8:05, moonrise at 8:44

Once we reach King’s Park, our coastal route will bring us past scenic harbor, bay, and ocean views – lit first by the setting sun, and then by the rising full moon.
• This ride is for 18+. • This is a NIGHT ride. We will be riding on dark roads. • A helmet, front headlight, and red rear light are required to participate. Be sure your lights are well charged. Please also bring your water bottle, snack, and bicycle lock. • Please check your air pressure, brakes, and gears to ensure your bike is in good working order before arriving. An air pump will be available at the start of the ride. • Dress for the weather! We will cancel the ride if weather/road conditions are not safe and attempt a reschedule within 3 days. Get ready to unleash your creativity at Whaler’s Brewery during our pottery painting event! 
Rebekah Cook Art will be bringing a large variety of pottery to choose from.
Registration fee is $20 which will secure your spot for a night of artistic fun with friends. 
Your registration fee not only reserves your seat but also covers all supplies, firing your pottery and a beer while you paint.
The price of your chosen pottery piece will be paid on the day of the event. Prices range from $14-$40.
Space is limited, so don’t miss out on the chance to create something truly unique.
