DESCRIPTION:Middletown\, on Aquidneck Island\, founded in 1743\, is one o
 f Rhode Island&rsquo\;s earliest settlements and is rich in history and 
 natural beauty. The town is the subject of the new book Images of Americ
 a Middletown (Arcadia Publishing) by Dr. Christine Haverington from the 
 Middletown Historical Society.\nTo celebrate the book&rsquo\;s debut\, t
 he Newport Historical Society and the Middletown Historical Society have
  partnered for a lecture by the author\, titled &ldquo\;Middletown\, Rho
 de Island: In the Center of American History.&rdquo\; The event will tak
 e place Thursday\, August 9\, 2012 at 5:30pm at the Newport Historical S
 ociety&rsquo\;s Colony House on Washington Square.\nDr. Haverington will
  talk about Middletown&rsquo\;s history\, as it is featured in the book.
  She will share details about the town&rsquo\;s founding\, the farmers w
 ho helped shape the town&rsquo\;s history and the inspirational local sc
 enery. She will discuss the central role Middletown has played in the de
 velopment of American politics\, culture\, military history and economic
  development.\nA Middletown resident\, Dr. Haverington is a Board Member
  of the Middletown Historical Society. She earned a BA in English from W
 illiams College and a doctorate in English literature from the Universit
 y of Massachusetts\, Amherst. She has published a long list of academic 
 books and articles.\nThis lecture is free and open to the public\, donat
