Emmanuel Church Speaker Series entitled "Life and Death at Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island's Civil War Hospital" with local historian and author  Frank L. Grzyb.  During the Civil War, thousands of wounded Union soldiers and Confederate prisoners convalesced in a general army hospital in rural Portsmouth Grove, RI.  Its story and the stories of the doctors, nurses, patients and guards that gave it life provide a new perspective on the interaction between the army and society in wartime and on life in Civil War America.  Mr. Grzyb will sign copies of his book “Life and Death at Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island’s Civil Was Hospital” after the lecture.  The lecture will be held in the church community hall and is free and open to the public.  Free parking is available in the church parking lot on Dearborn Street.  For information call the church office at 401-847-0675.
