DESCRIPTION:Did you know that a Mummy was put on display in the Old Colon
y House? That lectures on astronomy were given in Newport&rsquo\;s 4th B
aptist Meetinghouse? Or that the city was a center for live entertainmen
t hosting musicals\, comedies and Shakespeare&rsquo\;s plays? The Newpor
t Historical Society will present the exhibit Diversions and Entertainme
nts in 19th Century Newport\, which features historic advertisements and
highlights some popular forms of entertainment.\nThe advertisements fea
tured in Diversions and Entertainments in 19th Century Newport\, which w
ere known as broadsides\, promote the wide range of entertainments avail
able to 19th century Newporters. The broadsides highlight how people lea
rned about activities in town while showing how Newporters from over a h
undred years ago spent their free time. &ldquo\;Broadsides are fascinati
ng to investigate\,&rdquo\; explains NHS Curator Matt Keagle. &ldquo\;Th
is exhibit is about entertainment\, but it&rsquo\;s also about communica
tion. Before radio\, television\, or the internet\, broadsides were some
of the speediest forms of communication.&rdquo\;\nDiversions and Entert
ainment in 19th Century Newport is part of the Rhode Island Center for t
he Book&rsquo\;s 2012 Art of the Book Program &ldquo\;Rhode Island&rsquo
\;s Broadsides Rule!&rdquo\; which offers statewide exhibits and events
celebrating Rhode Island&rsquo\;s broadside history. Participating organ
izations include: John Hay Library at Brown Univeristy\, Pettaquamscut H
istorical Society\, Providence Public Library at the Providence Athenaeu
