The Slim 5K, organized by Slim Possible Newport, raised $2,000 for American Cancer Society Relay for Life Saturday morning.
The sun and mild temperatures brought out a a total of 111 runners and walkers Saturday for Slim Possible's 5k to fight cancer. When Melissa Bodenbender's father was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and was given a month to live, Slim Possible Newport and Bodenbender partnered up to organize the event. "After all expenses we are happy to report that we will be writing a check to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life for $2109," said Slim Possible's Patrick Snow. Lee Fontaine of Newport came in first overall, with a finish time of 19:23. Jay Grover-Silvestri of Newport was the overall male winner, with a finish time of 20:34. For the full results, click here.

Two Newport restaurants are donating a portion of their dinner proceeds this Thursday
Several Newport restaurants are joining in a statewide day to fight HIV/AIDS, Thursday, April 25. Pier 49 Seafood and Spirits and Speakeasy Bar & Grille will be donating a portion of its dinner proceeds on this day. They’re participating in Dining Out for Life, benefiting AIDS Project RI, which provides education, prevention and testing programs and a range of services for people living with HIV/AIDS in the state. Thirty restaurants across Rhode Island are participating on that day, which is also being observed in many communities across the nation and in Canada. An economist talking to Business Week said the city is typically a $1-billion-a-day metropolitan area.
CHARLESTOWN, MA -- How much does it cost to shut down a city for an entire day? Bloomberg Business Week reports that price tag is somewhere in the range of $250 million to $333 million, citing a chief economist at IHS Global Insight. The citywide shelter-in-place order was lifted shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, about 10 hours after the police lockdown was extended to the entire city of Boston. As of 6:30 p.m., police continued to search for the remaining at-large suspect in Monday’s bombing at the Boston Marathon finish line, with heavy activity continuing in the greater Boston community of Watertown.
