Artist Reva Golden completed the mural at Newport Bicycle over the weekend.
Have you noticed that Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard is a lot more colorful lately? Artist Reva Golden — recently moved back to Boulder, CO., after completing the work — completed a mural on the street-side wall of Newport Bicycle last Sunday, owner Christina Erwin said. The mural depicts the best of both bicycling and Newport, including a bicyclist, the Newport Bridge, waves and the Route 138 sign. Golden's artwork was completed just in time to inspire the community to participate in Bike Newport’s second annual Bike to Work Day, taking place all day on Friday, May 18.

Mokka officially opens today on Thames Street.
Lower Thames Street is about to get a caffeine buzz. Mokka, a new coffee shop founded by career chef Jack Corey, is scheduled to open its doors on Friday, May 10. “I’ve always wanted a coffee house,” he said two weeks ago, admist a sawdust-strewn floor and power tools scattered around the room. Even with the shop half completed at the time, the Arab vibe shone through in colorful prints and décor. Corey said the Lower Thames area lacked a certain type of community gathering place, which he aims to fill with his shop. He said he hopes it becomes a place where people check in early in the morning and still want to come back later that night. “We’re going to start small and see what the neighborhood wants.” The menu, however, will be anything…

US Labor Department’s OSHA proposes more than $117,000 in fines to Newport contractor for cave-in hazards at a Middletown work site.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed fines totaling $117,740 against Newport-based Raymond J. Cawley Contracting Inc. for allowing cave-in and other hazards while workers were excavating at 28 W. Main Road in Middletown to replace a sewer line. An OSHA inspection found two workers in an eight-foot-deep trench improperly shored or sloped to prevent sidewalls from caving in. Excavated materials were placed at the edge of the trench, which also lacked a sufficiently tall ladder that workers could use to exit swiftly and safely. Additionally, the workers were not wearing protective helmets, which exposed them to being struck by an operating backhoe’s bucket and the material falling out of it…

Stephanie Frazier Grimm's entry was accepted into the Huffington Post's "What do you want to do before you die?" contest.
Ask any child where they would want to spend their birthday. Chances are they won’t say, “in a hospital.” But for children who have no choice, Stephanie Frazier Grimm, owner of Couture Parties, wants to make the milestone a little bit easier to bear. When she saw a tweet that the Huffington Post was holding a contest with the cast from MTV’s The Buried Life posing the question, “What do you want to do before you die?” Grimm knew she had the answer. In her entry, Grimm shared the story of her Godson Christian, who was in the NICU after being born eight weeks premature. Christian’s mom, also Grimm’s best friend, said she could not imagine celebrating the new-born’s birthday in the hospital a year later. It was that moment when Grimm was …
