There are no jobs Americans won't do. They just won't do them for less then minimum wage. TheRead Moreemploy ers don't want to pay a fair wage. That is why they hire illegals.

The only place I see "illegals" working are in kitchens, yards, and painting homes. IRead Morehave talked with contractors and restaurant owners and asked them how much they pay these workers and I hear ($11.00/hr to wash dishes) ($15.00/hr to landscape) ($18.00/hr to paint exterior/interior, and tile). My second question was then: "why do you hire illegals?" And I was told that illegals come to work whenever the employer asks them to, in particular early in the morning, late at night, and on weekends and holidays. They never ask for a day off, are rarely late, and never miss a day. I was told this is a huge contrast to "American" employees (young and old) who want to work a 9-5 schedule. I think illegal aliens have a detrimental effect on our wages, and I think we should protect jobs for Americans, but the above is what I hear all the time.

Sounds like slave labor to me. Believe that is against the law. BTW - So is the hiring of Illegal Read MoreAliens.

Ghetto Newport strikes again! This is happening allll over the town. Good thing the town wantsRead Moremore no-income housing! I hope you get it back. It sounds silly but maybe signs in the neighbor hood might help? People may have seen it or know someone who has.

(1) What is your occupation? (2) How are you going to tell me that regionalization Doesn't saveRead Moremone y? -- The average high school in the US has over 1,200 students. If you combined Rogers and Middletown you would have just about the same amount. (3) It's not like Newport or Middletown have stellar schools, both are pretty mediocre and offer little support to students who aspire to go to college. Why don't they combine both school districts and offer two different programs, a public program, and then vouchers for gifted students to go to private schools?
Bill the 1st May 15, 2014 at 09:22 PM
School regionalization fails to save money because each Town keeps all the administration andRead Morecustod ial staff levels. Student levels are still the same so teacher staffing levels are the same. The only potential savings would be the elimination of superintendents, except that each community insists on keeping a tight hand on the reins, so they end up hiring one Super and then a Vice-Super for each community. In addition, busing costs increase, making the scheme a money loser. The biggest problem with regionalization is that the communities don't treat it like a business management approach. If they did, they would seek out efficiencies in all cases. Regionalization COULD save money if they eliminated 50% of the admin and 50% of the custodial staff and all but 1 superintendent. Of course, they could also contract out custodial and demand more efficiency from the administration.
George Costanza May 15, 2014 at 10:01 PM
Good points. Unfortunately in our case our communities (Middletown and Newport) won't need toRead Morevolunt arily seek efficiencies, those efficiencies will be thrust upon us. In the next 5 years you will see a change in State finances so severe it forces transformative change. The trigger will be the filing of bankruptcy by the City of Providence. Next year the State will have a $25 mil bill for 38 studio bonds, a $38 mil bill for the management of the RI Health exchange, and a $40 something mil bill for Medicaid. State funds to Newport and Middletown will dry-up. In addition, both towns will face increased legacy costs for their retired employees. In a few years you will see politicians begging voters to rationalize the school system (in part to layoff teachers and administrators). I'll bet the house on it.

You are not alone in that sentiment.
