Puppets, Punks and a Park: Oh My!

Though the weather forced the event date to be changed, The Honky Tonk Knights were absolutely awesome at their Thursday night performance at Ballard Park. More than 100 people attended the event, and many were dancing in the quarry meadow!  Check Ballard Park’s Facebook page for event photos by Kim Fuller.

Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye to Jenkins Construction Music Month again. If you missed the first two performances, make a date for July 25 because the series is going out with a bang: two fantastic performances in one day. The fun begins at 10 a.m. with a concert by The Toe Jam Puppet Band and continues at 6:30 p.m. with a performance by The Skinny Millionaires.

The Toe Jam Puppet Band engages audiences through storytelling and shadow puppetry while performing original songs from their three CD releases. The band formed in 2000 with the goal of making children’s music that adults could also enjoy. Each concert is made to feel like a children’s play group, and The Toe Jam Puppet Band encourages everyone to get involved. The band will perform from 10 to 11am in the quarry meadow. Learn more about The Toe Jam Puppet Band on their website.

The Skinny Millionaires, voted “Best Band” by Newport Mercury in 2010 and 2011, have been receiving widespread praise for their latest EP “Easy Tiger”. The band has performed with Deer Tick, The Super Soakers, and Lady Starlight (of Lady Gaga’s band). The Skinnies have a distinctive sound, a mix of garage punk and Americana. The brooding, folk-noir lyrics written by Mike O’Donnell and the melodies of the gypsy violin make for an unforgettable experience. You can listen to their songs on the band’s Facebook page.
