RITBA and the RI DOT, are both going to be holding meeting on the effects of the proposed new tolls and the effect it will have on local residents of Portsmouth and Tiverton, these meeting will be taking place in early Dec. Having to talk face to face with thousands of you folks from Middletown and Newport (Cowboy hat, T shirt) I don't understand why these 2 boards are just ignoring any imput that should be equal or possible more important than the other 4 towns in Newport county. It is vital that your voices be heard in order to stop Newport county from becoming the ATM for the rest of the state. Once these Tolls are put in place they will have results known and unknown, Jobs WILL be lost and prices WILL rise, more income will be removed from local taxpayers and sent upstate AND it will not be returned, BOTH the DOT and the RITBA say that this money will be used ONLY for the upkeep on 4 bridges, BUT we already pay for the upkeep on 2 with the gas tax, so the first thing that will happen is that ALL the gas tax money that WE in Newport county pay will go for use UPSTATE, nothing will return to us NOTHING. Then what will the Navy, Raytheon, NUSC, do? will they be willing to pay more for local contracts because the state has taken income from their workers?Local costs of living are considered when base closeing are discussed, Stop and donttoll have pointed out many other ways to fix this problem but it seems that the GA, Fox, and WEED want to do thinks the easy way, take the money from US Newport county taxpayers and no one else, Having gotten over 32,000.00 thousand signatures on the petition and now moving on to asking people and business to fill out our own impact study i urge everyone to help me/ us/ you/ friends/ parents kids, STOP THE TOLLS It has been great meeting and talking with all of you but due to medical issues I will be bowing out of this fight, please carry on in anyway you can, thanks to all of you , JIM L

Yeah, I really hate paying to maintain the things we use. We should probably all move to Somalia where they have a 0% tax rate.
Your facts are incredibly wrong. We currently pay for mait. on the Newport and Jamestown Bridge with TOLLS paid by people who have to go over the Newport Bridge every single day, like me. I pay for what I use. Time for you to do the same.
The reason you see eyes rolls from my end of the island is that we already pay for what we use and were asked to pay for what YOU use. We were ready for the increased toll on the bridge, until they announced new plans to toll to Sakonnet. It's fair to the people of Newport who pay their tolls for the bridges they use, but NOT fair for those UPISLAND to pay for the bridge they use.
You know, in ancient Greece, those who used circular logic were laughed out of the discussion.
Ha!

Sorry Ian M but 85% of the Island doesn't use that bridge, It was built to replace the ferry and bring JOBS to Newport county even when the ferry's ran the Sakonett river bridge was the life line of supplies to this island, just like it is now,Your end of the Island is a very small section of the entire population of Newport county. f your happy with your money going to support the rest of the state and get nothing in return thahts your choice, but over 55 % of the rest of newport County doesn't agree with you , and if i was having surgery I'm sure i would have gotten at least 75% to sign the peition, Oh just so you know YOUR fee's WILL be going up to, Do you know that your car registration will be going up $10.00 next year? And that NONE of that money goes to roads or bridges, If $2.00 of every car went to the bridges we wouldn't even need tolls, but greed and mismanagement upstate will always win, Hope you think it's all good when the prices you pay for everything goes up and jobs go down, It's the future your wishing on yourself and others,Folks in Johnston and Coventry , Etc will love having all their roads and overpasses fixed while the residents of Newport county pay a double gas tax and get nothing in return but the imposed right to pay more for everything

Hold onto your outrage, it will keep you warm during this cold winter. I love the made up statistics, it really adds credence to your argument or whatever that wall of horribly composed text was.
You're blind with rage and unable to see how paying for the things you use is how adults live in a civilized society. You chose to live on an island, you are free to leave anytime you want. Those of us that stay will pay what is necessary to live here.

Ian M, As you call your self is a RITBA employee who sees this as a plus for him. The rest of us be dammed. The money lost in sales, Income Tax , and all the other taxes and fees lost because of this toll are more than the toll will take in. This toll will kill businesses and drive up the cost of goods on the island. It's a foolish idea and needs to be rethought. The toll is a job killers !

Gee Joe you still want it all and for free......if the Stone Bridge were the one in question then maybe just a small toll, but no one stood up and yelled when those Island Park shops lost all that traffic, its closing also cost Tiverton a very nice hotel but we all survived, and now its time to pay your fair share and stop the freeloading off the rest of us......or fight for a fair toll for all of Newport County on both bridges, $.50 each way sounds good to me

Ian M, I have no personall outrage Don't need it, I live in Tiverton and was basicaly raised in Portsmouth, About the only reason I got to the island is to cruise the drive, so i can , like many other's never pay a dime in tolls if I chose, Not so for the many folks who work and live on or in Newport county, To compare the Impact of the New tolls to the old tolls put in place Only to support the Pell bridge is apples and oranges and we both know that, I 'm just trying to help all of many other folks out, sorry you are so bitter that YOU chose to pay tolls, But that is your choice, not money being removed by a form of raising revenue because the RI DOT has failed to do their jobs, It's funny the amount of comments I have begone getting from Newport The No tolls/ Yes lets make them pay tolls splits right along where folks live mainly

Jack once again, there have ways been found to stop the tolls, WITH all of RI paying for the state infrastucter, put car registration money, or a portion of in where it needs to go, to roads and bridge's, not just dumped into the general fund, add .02 cents to the gas tax and make it by law go to bridges, impose a toll on rt 95, You should be, like us looking to remove your iolls are reduce your end and place more on tourists To just whine about fairness when the real issue is about killing jobs and taxpayer money being sucked upstate never to return in not logical, The tolls paid on the PELL bridge go to keep that bridge in good repair and they ALL go to a private company, so are you saying you like ALL the toll money to go to them? They say they will spend 15 million a year to keep the bridges and roads of NEWPORT county in good repair, What about the OTHER 15 mill per year the tolls will give them? where's that going?and since We all pay .33 cents per gallon of gas, where is that going? we pay that NOW to maintain roads n bridges, so now WE pay twice? This is not just TOLLS and if you can';t see that then open your eyes please

All that money WE all paid was well spent on the old bridge, is that what you want ? The Newport Bridge also supports the Jamestown and Mt Hope Bridges and because we want it to last this time the Sakonet so open your piggy bank and pay for what you use.....fight what is a winable fight for a lower toll for all of us.

NO money was spent on the old BRIDGE, not one dime of all the gas taxes EVERY resident in RI paid, The next time anyone reading this and you Jack take a ride up rt 4 to Providence just look at the overpasses . They ALL need fixing, never worked on at all The Jamestown Bridge is paid for, The state wanted the MT hope Bridge and YOUR REP (Crowley ) kept it. As i said there are many ways to fix this, Starting with canning the RITBA and making the RI DOT do their job, Thieir is NO reaSON THE STATE CAN'T HANDLE BIDS TO MAINTAIN all THE BRIDGES, just because they piddled awaymillions of dollars over the years doesn't mean we can't make them do their jobs now, the GA gave aways millions to Studio 38 amd now their looking to hand many , many millions more to RITBA, and where do you think ALL that excees toll money will go? Straight to the GA so they can give the gift of our own money back to the folks that support them, Open your eyes JACK get the facts just what do you know of this?

Jim, you make some good arguments, it's too bad you're illiterate.
