You Ask, Patch Answers: What's Up With the City’s Website?

Have you been wondering why the City of Newport's website has been looking a bit bare lately?

The City of Newport’s website is currently experiencing make-under. For the forseeable future, www.cityofnewport.com will only provide contact information for key city employees and departments.

According to a report from Newport This Week, the site fell victim to a cyber attack last week, and has been taken down until a more secure version can be developed.

City Manager Jane Howington said the site was compromised three times in one week. Read the full story here.

The city’s calendar is not available, but the docket for tonight’s City Council meeting is available on the Secretary of State’s website and can be accessed here, along with all other Newport-related dockets and agendas.

As advised on the temporary site, residents can stay up to date on public safety information by following the Newport Police Department and the Newport Fire Department on Facebook.

The original website was pathetic anyway so no great loss. The larger issue is this. Why should I have to make a deal with the digital devil (Facebook) to get public safety information? If I need information from the NPD or NFD, why must I subject myself to Facebook's shameless data mining? Further, with the amount of money that flows through this city, its residents should have access to a website consistent with the town's "world class" reputation. Rather, the city has chosen to cheap out by farming out its responsibilities to Facebook. This is a more than a little troubling.
