Newport mail carrier Scott Wellott is finding his job pretty hit-and-miss today.
Making his way down Thames Street Wednesday morning, Wellott worked his way through the blowing snow, only to discover that many of the businesses he needed to deliver to were closed.
While plenty of shops downtown are temporarily closed this morning, Newporters are finding respite in cafes and restaurants. Starbucks on Thames Street opened at its regular time this morning, according to the baristas working around 11:30 a.m. Customers were also huddled inside Empire Tea and Coffee on Broadway.
If you're a local business owner who's open, or about to reopen, let us know via e-mail at cara.kenefick@patch.com.
Even though some Newporters have braved the snow, the streets are fairly quiet, save for snow plowers, shovelers and dog walkers. While many streets are plowed and appear passable, travel is still difficult, evident by the occasional car spinning its tires.
If you're staying safe from the storm from within the comfort of your home, here's a list of some local food establishments that are staying open and making deliveries:
Dunkin Donuts: Memorial Boulevard location, open; –Broadway location, open, but possibly closing early
Via Via: Will remain open until 2 a.m., still making deliveries
Nikolas Pizza: open
China Star III: open and making deliveries until 9:30 p.m.
