Woman With Knife, Pepper Spray Charged with Assault

The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

 

Maria M. Rosa, 53, of 22 Handy St., Providence, was arrested around 12:20 a.m. on Friday, July 20, for a domestic assault with a deadly weapon charge.

Police were dispatched to Festival Field for a report of a woman with a knife and pepper spray.

When police arrived, they found Rosa leaving the parking lot. She told police she had been arguing with her ex-husband and admitted to pepper spraying him. According to Rosa, she picked up the knife in self-defense.

The victim had a small cut on his arm, but did not require medical attention. He told police Rosa had showed up to one of the witness’s house and appeared drunk. During the argument, he said she came at him twice with a knife.

Two witnesses to the incident confirmed the victim’s account.

Other arrests

  • Dylan K. Barta, 22, of 26 Heath St., Newport, was arrested around 9:55 p.m. on Thursday, July 19, for a disturbing the peace charge. A woman reported Barta to police when he was banging on her door and yelling. According to reports, Barta was looking for someone and was at the wrong house. 
  • Joseph M. Bates, 19, of an unknown address, was arrested around 4:59 p.m. on Thursday, July 19, for an active warrant.
