Who is Newport's Person of the Year?

TIME magazine names their person of the year every year. Tell us who you think should win from our town!

Time magazine invited votes on 40 candidates, including Barack Obama, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un, as the person of the year for 2012. Other options included The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle.

But who cares about the same-old, same-old? Who is Newport's Person of the Year—the man or woman who, in Timespeak, “most influenced the news this year for better or worse”?

Tell us your pick in the comment section below!

This is not such a great idea Patch. This should have been a multiple choice poll.

At least Frank "admits" he is dumb! The majority of Patch readers are a bunch of morons. Clueless about most serious issues facing our country. Joe made a good point and how can you dispute the facts. And if you can, lay them out. Educate me. The point is WE DO have a debt problem. At least Ryan offered a solution whether you agree or disagree. But the same old crap responses from from the pea brain crowd of Newport. But hey ... the good news is that your unemployment benefits were extended for 12 more months. And since you have so much time on your hands, enlighten me. Answer the question ... who would YOU pick? You obviously didn't agree with Joe. That's cool, although your response was dumb, the response from Jack was even dumber.

Every one has an opinion....some base it on reality and some base it on some kind of right wing libertarian utopia. What may be tantalizing to you personally (because of some dysfunction in your life) is not going to work or be even remotely useful to 330 million people. These people are the ones who will create the jobs, work them and deal with the rewards and failures of that work. Not some pie in the sky rightie who has no clue of what is really going on except from a sophomoric novel by a coward.

So, Ryan is now a doofus for offering a solution. First time in my lifetime that our congress hasn't passed a budget during an entire administration. And they just voted themselves a pay raise. They can't even do their job ... only in America. Solution: tax more to spend more. Get rid of them ALL. Bunch of looney tunes. Mixed thoughts about Bill and Hill. The same president who publically lied to the American people about his oval office blow jobs and to his wife "stand by your man Hillary". I didn't care about the blow jobs ... but in the oval office. The same office many men and women died for? No respect. His first two years were such a disaster, the Republicans took the majority. For 6 years they worked together, all sides, to balance the budget. That's why a majority of American have a healthy opinion of Bill. Hilliary??? Things are great!!! Mexico and drugs. Missiles thrown into Israel. Nukes in Iran and North Korea. China owning the debt of the United States. Syria killing thousands of civilians. Egypt in the hands of radical Muslims. Murder of a US Ambassador and Navy Seals. Libya government unsettled. Susan Rice misled.
Hugo Chavez in South America. A nut job elected in France. Iraq and Afghanistan losing causes. The "best Sec of State" in decades??? Folks .... this is what you get when you legalize weed ... Dope.

Well I guess you are one of the ones who need that weed the most....Sorry to have opened an open wound that will never heal. Nothing is perfect....but I guess you want to roll into the dark ages and allow feudalism. Thats what Mr. Ryan's attempt at a solution to the debt and revenue problem that we face. Far to draconian and so so 1921, Do some real thinking and try to get a grip on real world economics and problems. Stop watching the faux and try something else. Anything else.

Another filthy, disgusting, profane comment by Joe Sousa, unsuccessful candidate for Tiverton town council.

Thanks for showing the voters they made the right choice by NOT electing you.

Joejay how many infantile posts can you make in one day? Why would anyone like your behind? Did the roommates in Cranston like your behind as well.

So Mike ... defend Hillery. You said she's the best in decades. Educate me on why you feel that way? What has she done? And while you're thinking, please tell me why $16+ trillion is great economic policy. Is it because my taxes pay for birth control? Why pay the salary for a United States Senator if they can't pass a budget? So, tell me something good about all this. I'm taxed out my ass. I won't lay off my employees but I sure as hell won't hire new ones. Save me with your wisdom!!

I'd like to remind everyone that the purpose of this article was to celebrate the accomplishments of Newport residents and acknowledge newsworthy locals, not spark a debate on national politics. Please stick the to the topic, which I think would be far more interesting than the name calling in previous comments!

Thank you to commenters who have already named Brad Read and Bari George as newsworthy Newporters!

I must apologize for being part of the partisan bickering......was lured into it......I would think that anyone who had to toil during the summer to provide services to the 'tourists' and was left high and dry by the seasonal aspect of this business. They are the people of the year

Unfortunately, the patch has become almost unreadable with the grandstanding that is done by the same people, every day. You want to argue about the state of our govt. or the elected officials, then argue those when the articles present those issues or create your own. Here is an article about the positives of Newport, which many amazing people attempt to contribute to making a better place to live. I think Patch should quickly delete comments that are not focused on the article at hand.

And the #1 violator of the Patch TOS would be Joe Sousa. He has now changed his writing style from silly, incoherent, gramatically incorrect posts to vulgar profanity. He singlehandedly shut down the eastbayri.com website, and unfortunately is well on his way to doing the same with the Patch.
