What Intersections Should Have a Stop Sign, But Do Not?

Tell us in the comments.

Last month, Patch asked readers what were Newport's most ignored stop signs.  We received more than a dozen responses from concerned residents.

Today, Patch would like readers to comment on intersections that should have a stop sign, but do not.

We asked our Facebook readers what they thought. Here's what they had to say:

Caroline Monahon: Bellevue and Bowery!

Eddie Valen: Washington sq and Thames. Traffic was never blocked up when the light was out of service for construction of the horse trough.

Kevin Boughton II: morton ave/spring st. there isnt one going up morton, and it only adds confusion. a 3-way would be much easier

Do you know of a location or dangerous intersection where a stop sign is needed?

Share where it is in the comments section, below.

Neighbors on the upper end of Malbone Rd submitted a petition several years ago to the City Council trying to get a stop sign at Garfield St. to slow the speeders down as they fly down the curve by the Malbone Estate. We were told that "stop signs do not affect the flow of traffic." So what's the point of them, then? We continue to have speeders, we continue to have accidents, and no one seems to care. I do think the city is waiting for a deadly accident before stopping the careless driving on this road.

What difference does it make? This is Rhode Island, worst drivers I have ever seen. Ever come to a four way stop here? No one knows what to do and drivers act like they are doing you a favor by granting you the right of way when you DO have the right of way. Oh, and not to mention my favorite "I will just keep inching out in traffic until someone has to stop to let me in." I have actually had drivers honk their horn at me because I came to a complete stop at a stop sign instead of rolling through like most do. So, your question is pointless.

Maybe just try enforcing law at the existing stop signs. How many cars and bikes just roll through, barely even pausing?

Or how about a stop sign where one shouldn't be? On McCallister street there is a stop sign to let the cross street, small street between Lee and McCallister go through without stopping??? The stop sign should be on the cross street, not McCallister.
Also agree with the statements above. Bill Coffey, Elaine Cascio, Hairsonfire and Daphne.

Stop signs should be placed at busy intersections to control traffic. They should NOT be used to slow cars down. A perfect example are the stop signs on Eustis that were installed about 20 years ago. We were told at the time that they were only there on a temporary basis. They are ridiculous and they should be removed.

Just something to think about re: having a stop sign by your house, especially in these tight neighborhoods with no yards and houses sitting right on the street.

I can appreciate wanting to have a stop sign to encourage people to slow down. I live on a busy-ish street that has many stop signs but not on my corner - and as a result, after stopping at last stop sign, some drivers seem to attempt maximum speed for the distance between that one and the next. Which results in many cars going way over the 25 mph as they go by my house.

However, having a stop sign at my corner would then open me up to having to listen to squeaky brakes, buses slowing and then accelerating....you get the picture.

I'd love for people to slow down - but I'd prefer enforcement. But since it would only be needed to slow traffic and not for intersection safety, I'd fight a stop sign tooth and nail.

For eons, I have wished (and even asked my council person) that there was a stop sign on the cross walk on the corner of Broadway and Dr. Marcus Wheatland Blvd. (across from Cafe 200 and the post office). Cars scream down Broadway likes it's a highway and since this above-mentioned intersection is big and busy (lots of kids, mom's with strollers, elderly folks), it can also be confusing and dangerous. Especially when cars careen down Dr. Marcus without slowing down. The other issue is that out of state drivers don't always know that it's a law to stop for pedestrians in a cross walk. I wish the city would please, please, please put a stop sign there, which would slow cars down so that by the time they arrive at the cross walk by Dunkin Donuts, they're going slow enough to stop in time (thankfully at least there is a cone in that walkway). It would make Broadway and Newport much safer!!

On Bull Street where it crosses Mount Vernon should have a 3 way stop. Mount Vernon has the stop signs but Bull Street does not.

Cars pull on Bull Street off of Spring (right next to City Hall) and speed up the Hill as if it was a drag race without regard to pedestrians. I have seen children come close to getting hit and many pets have been killed.

Hanging more signs doesn't do much without enforcement. NPD currently sends out a "weekly crime trends" report. You can skim them at http://newportready.org/library/ Perhaps there could be a weekly/monthly summary of traffic citations written by NPD so we can better understand how many warnings/tickets are being issued for speeding, running a red light, running a stop sign, and failing to yield for a pedestrian? WDYT?
