Viewfinder: Sculpture Scavenger Hunt

Some statues are made for fun, and some are historical surprises.

From a welcoming rooftop ardvaark at the end of the Pell Bridge exit to a touching tribute to student nurses outside of Newport Hospital, Newport is awash with public sculpture that's just for fun. See how many you can find as you drive around town.

The old Hury Gurdy man and his monkey are in business collecting donations for Child and Family Serivces 2day and night in the middle of Brick Market, while The Wave sports a diver's feet at the entrance to lower Thames Street. Meanwhile, on the waterfront, mesh dolphins sport on top of a tower.

For a history lesson with a twist, check out the plaque at the end of Spring Street behind the courthouse to see where the original spring stood in our early days. Then head up to Newport Museum of Art to admire their outdoor statues, especially a delicate dove-ringed fountain.

And finally, at the intersections of Green End and Miatonomi Roads, a great wooden bear marks the entrance to Hillside. Right now he's wearing a flower in his ear and mischief in his eye.
