how about the whole swamp area or is nationalgrid going to fix what they tore up. whole area was done 8 yrs ago and un-done 2 weeks later by nationalgrid

Can you imagine what a tourist might think as they roll into Newport heading down Broadway ??? When suddenly the road surface changes in the up and coming Broadway business district to a bumpy, patch on top of patch ?? It looks neglected and it feels awful to drive over, especially as I'm driving past City Hall...Really?? this has to be the worse street in Newport..please focus on this problem. Thanks!!

Broadway. It is one of the main entrances to our city and it is so bumpy from being torn up and patched here and there that parts fall off the cars going by. The only good thing about it is that we don't need to install speed bumps to slow people down.

Broadway between hospital & washington sq. SHAMEFUL ... this is one of two roads into town.

I agree! BROADWAY is the worst. And then all the streets around the hospital. Those poor patients in the ambulances, getting more banged up just trying to get to the ER!!!

I totally concur with the comments on Broadway! My gosh, when I have friends in town and we go downtown that way, it's embarrassing!

Agree -- Spring and Broadway. I swear I lose a filling every time I drive down those streets. Clarke Street is also a mess. I've contacted the city about replacing the traffic lane line on Washington Square. It will ease traffic by allowing people to use the left lane to make the U-turn at the bottom of Eisenhower Park to turn up Touro Street. This simple solution will ease the logjam that can back up to City Hall.

Over the last several years they have torn up the streets between Bedlow and Canonicus. They paved Rowland Rd and King Phillip but somehow missed Curry? Don't get me wrong, Spring and Broadway are bad but we have been waiting several years for Curry to be paved. All they do is come by once a year and patch the holes.

Stop paving roads in Newport. Get rid of the asphalt, put in pavers instead. Cobble stone all the streets.

Property values will increase, people will slow down, we will save tons of money over time as pavers last almost forever. Thames and Washington Square already have pavers underneath the asphalt.

Broadway would be great with pavers, use the pavers right up to the post office, then asphalt the rest of Broaway north to 1 mile corner.

The union highway workers can do something else, like repair the sea walls on the water front and build more piers and boat slips.

Three cheers for the America's Cup and Tall Ships event focus that brought dollars and priority for road improvements to Newport. Kudos to the city engineering staff and other parties for getting the work done. Looking forward to the Memorial Blvd traffic calming and Complete Streets improvements championed by Peter Martin and RIDOT. Would LOVE to know what's planned and scheduled for the three main in-town artery crater-filled dangerous eyesores: Bellevue, Broadway and Spring, as well as paint/patch of stop lines, crosswalks, potholes and cracks around town.

I think think the Broadway area needs the most repair as thats one of the busy areas of the city. Some of the side streets are bad but most of the people that complain about them don't live on them, they use them for cut thoughs. Broadway is used by everyone. Thames looks great after all the work they did but now it needs speed limit signs or speed bumps to slow everyone down. The street I live on was done last year and now I think people just like to see how fast they can get to the next intersection. Maybe we could spend some of that money on temp speed bumps for the side streets in the summer months like they put up the road lane separation poles on Thames at Memorial.

How about we make Thames Street a WALKING street (maybe first try a weekend? or between certain hours?) and leave the cars at home!!

and soon your looking to get your front end aligned;When was the last time Spring
and Broadway were re-paved,if ever;Shameful to say the least.

Brian is absolutely right. Broadway should be the first priority. It's in terrible shape.

When are the Bricks going back on Court House Street as stated by our councillors that they were being temporarily removed.....this is a Colonial Street with history behind it and I don't think Asphalt was around when the Old Colony House was built

Does the City not organize their improvement efforts with National Grid? And who is actually responsible for prioritizing street paving? I use Eustis Ave as a cut through every day. The entire street was repaved for absolutely no reason last year. Now, a year later National Grid is coming along and preparing to rip up the street to install new gas lines. As usual, they'll do a shoddy repair like they've done everywhere else. Just take a look at all of the streets where the gas lines have already been installed. It's a mess! They are also allowed to rip up concrete sidewalks and then repair it with asphalt??? Who is really watching over our streets and tax dollars? By the way Jack ... I may be mistaken but I believe those bricks & cobblestones disappeared. The city does have a small brick & cobblestone stockpile of them but those from Washington Square never made it to the pile. C_Newport to answer your question I called and asked the city about that and they told me they try to coordinate with the utilities when necessary. However I do not see that happening. Bedlow is one of the worst streets in Newport and was left off the fix it list it was dug up and water mains were replaced and the road was left in terrible disrepair, the city does a lousy job following up on jobs when they are done . And at great tax payer expense.The road they did on Malbone got washed out during the storm last Saturday and I think that they have repaired it but it had to have been shoddy work to get washed out 2 weeks after it was done and it is probably going to happen again in the next big rain storm. Bedlow and Broadway are by far the WORST streets in Newport.

Kate, u r 110% correct. I live near Bedlow and it's a mess. I am amazed at the lack of communication between departments, but in a strange way not surprised.

I wouldn’t expect to see anything done to Broadway (At least the section from Equality Park to the Square) until the streetscape plan is finalized. With expanded sidewalks and change in traffic patterns, it really doesn’t make any sense to pave it only to have to change it again.
Spring Street is horrific, and Congdon has so many patches that it’s hard to see where the cold pack ends and the streets begin.
