SOUND OFF: Does Newport Have a Poop Problem?
Dozens of you voiced your opinion on Facebook yesterday regarding owners cleaning up after their pets.
Yesterday, we asked on Facebook if owners failing to clean up after their dogs on public streets and sidewalks was a significant issue in town.
Your answers were a resounding "Yes!"
Here's what a few of you had to say:
Kevin Boughton II: yes! i see bags that have been used, tied in a knot and then left on the sidewalk EVERYDAY! i have 2 dogs and pick up after both of them. the fact that someone would pick it up and leave the bag, irritates me to no end!
Carolyn Russo Cozad: I don't see dog poo or bags on the streets, but it wouldn't hurt to install dog poop bags....and add the "please pick up after your pet" signs
Lynn Underwood Ceglie: Newport had mutt mitts all over Newport. There is really no excuse to not pick up after your dog. The thing. that drives me crazy are owners who don't put their dogs on leashes. I can't go to Cliff Walk anymore because dogs just roam free on the path and my dog is terrified since the big dogs hover over her. There are also people who walk their dogs downtown unleashed. I see that the cemetery is off limits now???
Phil Landers: I see dog bags only at parks, not any on Thames street. Maybe they should put some poop bags on the main strip and not just at the parks.
Barbara J Causey-Costa: It's awful on Broadway by the Hospital all the way to Cranston Calvert School, it's like hopscotch thru the poo!!!!!
The community seems to agree that this is a problem, but the better question is "How do we fix it?" Is the blame on the owners for not picking up, the city for not enforcing ordinances, or a combination of both?
Should there be more dog bag stations and garbage cans around town or would you rather see police officers issuing citations?
Leave your suggestions and thoughts in the comments and Patch will follow up with city officials to see what can be done to keep our streets cleaner.

Please not make dogs suffer because of silly owners. I rarely see poop and I walk miles all over Newport.
I always pick up. Most people do. There are some who routinely let their dog out to go while they stay indoors or forget to bring a bag but it is rare

why should the people of Newport supply crap bags for dog owners? im assuming everyone has plastic bags at home ,maybe they should use them for Ive seen the snobs on the south end take them by the hand fulls and ive seen them used as birthday bags on the northend. may be dog owners are letting the powers that be know that Newport is nothing but a giant toilet and they should get rid of idiots at cityhall

I really think our police officers have more important things to do than go after people for not picking up after their dogs. I walk all over Newport with my dog, I pick up after him and yes I have seen a bag or two left behind but I don't feel like its such an issue that the police need to get involved.

They don't pick up after their dogs where I walk in Middletown. It is disgusting.

Poop is definitely a problem in the area of Newport where we live. Not only is it on the sidewalks but in our yard. We have a dog and always carry multiple bags with us, just in case.

In the big scheme of things I don't see this as a major problem. Yes, it's annoying when dog owners don't have the common decency to pick up after their dogs, but I have seem many more owners doing the right thing than not. Hell, I've seen more goose crap in ten square feet of Brenton Point State Park than dog poop in all of Newport - and nobody seems too spun up about it.

I don't believe it's a widespread problem but I do think it would be helpful to "remind" dog owners of proper poopy etiquette. I find dog poop in my garden, which is only possible when the owners lift their dogs onto my wall so they can crap in the flower beds. Bad enough that they do it to begin with but then not to pick it up? It's just rude.

When we moved into our new house I found what appeared to be dog crap in my yard every day. 6' fence all around the property. Can't be a dog. Then I remember the two big very large cats at the house behind us, but the owner said she did not let the cats roam free at night (coyotes)! Then one night I heard a rucous on the back pation and opened the door and there was a opposum staring at me. I yelled at it and it ran off to a tall tree in the back yard and went up it like a monkey. I got a live trap and set it up with some hotdogs and peanut butter in a dish in the back. The next morning I had a large male. The next two nights I got two females. I carried all three, one at a time down near the bay a mile away and set them free. That was a couple of months ago and no poop in the back yard until just this morning. So I am going to set the trap out again. Opussum can climb extremely well. I find it hard to believe someone is lifting their dog over your wall...unless you have a wacko living nearby and you could probably catch him at it and if it is a good dog you could hold him hostage and call the cops. Oh, that would make my day and worth the price of a pound of good ground beef for the dog.

My wall is stone and relatively wide is only a couple feet high - a spry little dog or a bigger dog could get atop it no problem, and my neighbor has caught someone in the act. She saw a woman lifting a small terrier onto my wall and watching it poop and then walking off. I've been keeping my eye out for her. I clean dog poop out of the same area in my garden a few times a year. I've also found it in my shell driveway and in another ground level bed. It is always small dog poop. Not cat or other critter poop. And since this person has been caught in the act, I'm pretty sure it's just someone being a jerk.

and I should add - the wall is a retaining wall, and the bed that is pooped in is level with the top of the wall.

It's not a huge problem, but there are people (and I hate to be sexist, but it's mostly men who hate to embarrass themselves by picking it up) who either leave the bags or look the other way while their dog is pooping, then walk away. I find land mines in my front yard ALL the time. I walk my two dogs every day and have a container filled with poop bags attached to their leashes. And I bring those filled bags home and dispose of them. It shouldn't be a big deal. But because of inconsiderate dog owners who don't pick up, we were barred from Sachuest Point several years ago (and it was horrible what was left, so I don't blame them!). But my dog and I used to enjoy that nice walk there. No more. We're stuck with a crappy, tiny dog park, and fewer and fewer safe places to walk.

Funny you say men...the culprit at my house is an old woman. Same with another old woman and her dog that one of my friends has spoken to about letting her dog poop in her yard without picking it up. Old ladies who don't clean up after their dogs. I assumed it was a generational thing.

I have a dog and pick up. Most of my dog friends do the same. The good news is that eventually the illegal poop goes away with a good rain storm. What doesn't go away is "people trash". Welcome to "pigtown" because dog poop is not the big problem. The real shit in this town is the total lack of respect for trash. It is beyond me that people, not dogs ... polute just about every corner. Newport does not have respect, it's going down, down hill. Our elected officials are by name only and they do not care. Murder, muggings and trash. What a waste of my tax dollar.
