Police Uncover Marijuana Grow Operation at Chapel Terrace
The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.
A Newport man was arrested after police found more than 25 marijuana plants in his home.
Antonio B. Carson Sr., 50, of 20 Chapel St., Newport, was arrested around 11:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, for a drug manufacturing charge.
According to reports, police found more than 25 marijuana plants growing in Carson’s basement.
Police were at Carson’s home to investigate the whereabouts of his daughter, who had been missing since the afternoon. She was later found at her cousin’s house.
When police asked to look in the basement to search for her, Carson said he did not have a basement. He also said the door leading to the basement was a closet.
Once police went into the basement, they found a grow operation and seized the plants, fertilizer, and lights.
Carson reportedly said he had a medical marijuana card allowing him to grow plants because he had glaucoma, but not a growing card. However, he never produced a card to police.
During a search of his home, police found and seized approximately 170 grams of marijuana, valued at more than $1,000.
The above reports detail arrests made by the Newport Police Department. Descriptions of all events are based solely on police officer reports provided to Patch.

Just because he lives where he does doesn't mean that he doesn't work... Do you know him?....
I thought it was funny that he told police that he had no basement LOL...
It's 2012... he was going about it all wrong of course, maybe he should live in CO. and WA.where it is legal NOW... Weed is not a drug, it's a plant... go after these fools around Newport who get government benefits every month and smoke crack... and drink liquor...

If this man is a VALID medical marijuana patient then he has EVERY Right to Grow in his own home WITHOUT a Caregivers Card.
As a matter of Fact RI is a state that also allows other MEDICAL marijuana Patients with cards in there state to Grow and Uses there Medicine in RI as long as you are doing it under RI law.
I don't know this man or his intentions but I do that all Police and Enforcement Units should make themselves VERY VERY aware of the Laws that RI has Passed to PROTECT MEDICAL MARAJUANA PATIENTS
Please See attached Link for more info on RI MEDICAL MARAJUANA Laws

Some of these comments are such a joke! The dude lied the whole way through and 27 plants in subsidized housing what did you think he was doing with it.. Peace and love drugs are swell what a world we have turned into. Maybe instead of buying all the peraphanalia to grow his stash he should start working...

If he had a card he would have produced it. All that free (for him) electricity he was using should have tipped of the cops. His daughter is gonna be GROUNDED!

How do you know he is on rental assistance?! Many people who live in chapel terrace work and pay their fair share of rent. Some people live there because they have no choice.. not everyone can afford to pay $800+ for rent even if they do work a full time job. That 1st comment was very judgemental! We don't know the income levels of every one there.
Both my parents worked fulltime when my siblings and I were kid...they chose public housing so they could save money for us kids to attend college.
Forgive that person God, they know not what they say..

So Let Me Get This Right, Your Parents Lived In Public Housing So They Could Save Money To Pay For Your College? That Doesn't Sound Right To Me. I Work Hard For Everything I Have, But I'm Still Paying For My Own Home, And Guess What, One Day I'll Pay For My Kid To Go To College. Can Someone Tell Me How I Can Go About Moving Into Public Housing So I Can Save For College?

Did your parents grow pot in their basement to save some money, too? Seriously. There is right and wrong. He is living in PUBLIC housing with his child and growing illegal (for now) drugs in his home. Quite the upstanding citizen I you ask me. Perfect example for his kid to follow.

It's amazing alright! What highness (!) and mightiness! Not to mention ignorance. And that same old sad tired song and dance again. You need to grow a life! And make sure you have your card! And who paid for all the glass for your houses? Obviously not you, since you're always "hardworking and 'poor.'" If you're so into self-reliance and self-determination, then it must be your fault and yours alone that you're so hardworking and yet ... can't have what you want. Lets see: you shouldn't live in sub housing if you don't work - and you shouldn't live there if you do - so who shou ... Oh, that's right, there shouldn't BE any sub housing. Laws of survival. Lets watch the nature channel. And I sure hope you guys don't drink ...

Sir you're another one that is running her mouth while on the outside looking in...you're the one that needs to grow a life! Judging people according to where they live and how much they can afford to pay to live..I've seen plenty of people like you run their mouth and then end up in a situation where they have to live under the same conditions as those people they fault. God can put you in any situation to show you what its like. Even the hardest working people sometimes need a hand. Let he who has never sinned cast the 1st stone..... oh that's right Sue you're not God so you have no right to judge anyone!

Cris I don't give a Dsng what sounds right to you! My parents did what they had to so we could go to college and we did. Who gives a dang what you think. I have good hardworking parents. My dad builds nautical vessels for the U.S. Navy. You assume every person in public is poor or on welfare ,not true. And if you like I can bring my degree to your face to show you,I don't have to hide behind the computer to speak, I'll do it face to face. I'm glad my parents sent me to college, if not I might of still been stuck on that island, instead I live in Scituate now in my own house with my husband and our girls... I not ashamed that I lived in public housing because my parents went to work everyday. Only judgmental jerks like you make it even more difficult for those who are trying hard to get somewhere. What a shame we have these kinds of people in earth.

Look at the high and mighty people who look down on others who are less fortunate, I'm glad I'm not raising my girls to be ignorant, judgmental, prejudice and rotten towards others. We serve food to the homeless/less fortunate during the holidays, we do it as a family. I always donate to toys for tots and clothes to those in need. When I buy new furniture, I give the old to the furniture bank, perhaps a family who lost everything in a fire or flood can use that help. Oh but according to the high and mighty Patrick, Sue & Cris, we should help noone, its survival right Sue, I guess those caught in Katrina&Sandy don't need to be helped either, survival... right?!
