Police Make Arrest in Alleged Robbery
The suspect was charged with first-degree robbery and crack cocaine possession.
Newport police have arrested the man suspected of robbing a Newport woman early this morning at the intersection of Gould Street and Congdon Avenue, officials said late Wednesday afternoon.
William Thomas, 33, of Middletown, was charged with first-degree robbery and possession of crack cocaine.
According to reports, he allegedly followed the 28-year-old victim home after she left Pour Judgement around 1 a.m. He pushed her down and stole her wallet before fleeing the scene in a car with another woman.
During the robbery, the victim broke off the side-view mirror of the car. Thomas later went looking for the mirror at the Newport Police Department, claiming a fighting couple had knocked it off.
Police found his story to be suspicious, seized his car and took Thomas in for questioning. He was subsequently arrested.

crack not only kills, but makes you incredibly stupid. This idiot Thomas handed himself right to the police.. well done, case closed and the police can move on to removing more of these low lifes off the streets!

I always find it funny when dumb criminals help to get themselves arrested. They should put a sign above the entrance to the Police Dept. that says "If you've done something wrong, enter here.".....lol

Hasn't the NPD been warned about this area by its residents? The last time we heard about Gould St, the story involved a murder. I would think a couple of well placed beat cops could stem this nonsense. Or does their contract preclude them from walking? I don't think I have ever seen a cop on foot in this town. But then again, "Newport doesn't have a crime problem". I've had enough of this dump. This town is broken. Good luck everyone.

You can get a legal form of combination tear gas/pepper spray with ultraviolet dye from any gun or police supply store.
I've used it to catch a person who assaulted me. They were sprayed in the eyes and rendered blind but the dye allowed police to further identify them.
