Police Log: Two Boys Charged with Arson; 4 Other Arrests

The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

 

Two Newport boys, one 12-year-old and one 14-year-old, were arrested Wednesday afternoon for fifth-degree arson charges.

Police were dispatched to a Pond Avenue residence for an attempted arson report.

Reports said the witness saw one boy pouring a gas can onto a planter and corner of a house. The other boy tossed a cigarette he had been smoking onto where the boy had poured, but it did not ignite, reports said.

When he went outside to confront them, they boys ran away.

Police located the boys and placed them under arrest.  

Threats, resisting arrest

A 16-year-old Newport boy was arrested around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28 for resisting arrest and threats to a public official charge.

According to reports, he was holding a phone and would not give it back to the owner.

When the officer told him to give the phone back, the boy reportedly threatened him.  

Other arrests

  • David R. Cadier, 31, of 5 Howard St., Newport, was arrested around 12:27 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, for a first-offense DUI charge and refusal to submit to a chemical test.
  • George Smith, 40, of Newport, was arrested around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, for a domestic assault charge.
  • Matthew Gray, 32, of Newport, was arrested around 12 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, for a domestic disorderly charge.
