PHOTOS: Croquet at Rough Point is a Hit

Locals were "Dressed to play" at Doris Duke's former home for a night of croquet on the lawn.

This past Thursday night, got a little playful as it hosted ‘Croquet on the Lawn’ as the third event in the mansion’s After Dark series.

“For the last five or six years we’ve done lectures to bring people in, in a different way to Rough Point and recently we’ve gotten hooked up with the gallery night schedule and basically we do stuff that are themed to the exhibits,” said Lisa Dady, Director of Education for Newport Restoration Foundation. “It’s interesting this year. It seems that people just want to get out and play and so the 'come play at a mansion' . . . tagline makes sense. We may do croquet again because people like it and its easy and fun."

The exhibit “Dressed to Play” showcased the stylish 20th century sportswear of Doris Duke.

The night was a hit, and the lawn was filled with eager croquet-goers all hoping to get a lesson with the professional croquet instructor Dave Cahoon from the International Tennis Hall of Fame

"It seems to be a pretty local group and our goal was to get the local community to take advantage of this gorgeous spot,” Dady said.
